With a toco (tokodynamometer) transducer strapped to the maternal abdomen, clinicians can measure the duration, frequency, and relative pressure of uterine contractions. In addition to providing an indication of the progress of labour, when combined with data on fetal heart rate, this information can guide clinicians in determining whether the fetus is under stress and whether intervention is required to avoid complications.
